The Miracles of Drinking Green Tea
Antioxidants
Green tea and matcha is known to be rich in polyphenols, which are antioxidants with many healthful properties. The polyphenols in tea are known as catechins of which green tea contains six primary catechin compounds: catechin, gallocatechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechin, epicatechin gallate (Ecg), and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg). Of these 6 components EGCg is the most potent antioxidant component in green tea.
Amino acids
The alkaloid l-theanine — an amino acid component related to caffeine — is known for its calming effect on the nervous system. As an alkaloid l-theanine is essentially a stimulant. But in comparison to caffeine it is known to also possess positive relaxing properties. This makes tea a beverage that both invigorates and calms. This dualistic property of l-theanine is said to have tremendous effects on raising awareness, focus and concentration.
Other nutritious components
Green tea and matcha also contains Vitamin C and many minerals such as chromium, manganese, selenium and zinc. These substances are related to boosting the immune system and promoting overall health.
Matcha is richer in amino acids — thus l-theanine. Sencha contains larger amounts of antioxidants and EGCg. Catechins in green tea develop through photosynthesis in the leaf from amino acids. Since tea leaf for sencha is not shaded during cultivation more photosynthesis has been able to occur, leading into a larger production of catechin components. On the contrary, tea trees for matcha are commonly shaded for extensive periods of time during cultivation. Cutting out the sunlight prohibits photosynthesis to occur on a larger scale and suppresses the production of catechins, thus maintaining more amino acids.
A combination of both matcha and sencha will permit the drinker to obtain larger amounts of both beneficial antioxidant properties from EGCg, and the enhanced calming effects of l-theanine. This of course in addition to other health-promoting and immune-system-boosting nutrients such as vitamin C, Zinc and other minerals.
