Native Hand-picked Kamairicha - The Emperor's Trophy

The Tea Crane

  • $1900

This premium grade tea is carefully produced in the Gokasé region of Miyazaki prefecture. The tea leaves employed are carefully harvest by hand, and then processed into a traditional kamairicha (pan-fired tea). The process of heating the tea leaves after harvest (and brief withering) on a large hot-plate or frying-pan is a practice more common in China and Taiwan, but it also constitutes the tradition of tea manufacturing on the Southern islands of Japan. A tea produced in such a fashion does not only appear more curly in the end-product, the brief withering and firing stages add immensely to the aroma of the tea.

This hand-picked tea is representative of its local culture because of the traditional manufacturing methods that have been employed. It is also indicative of the traditional tastes of the region since a local cultivar has been used for the cultivation of the leaf.

The manufacturer of this tea has been awarded a prize by the Imperial household in succession to a tasting and assessment of the product.

The current batch is from the Spring 2017 harvest of the native cultivar grown in this region.
